Asked the question to Allen Hutton of Hutton Winches in Australia. Simple
answer, simple solution. He sent me a drawing and the way to do it.
Apparently, this winch is a later model. The top retaining ring holds the main
shaft in, not anything in the gear box. The metals stick. The main shaft
simply slides into the center pinion and was stuck. A couple taps from
underneath popped it out the top.
