I had a slightly different but equally irritating problem. When pumping water
in to flush, there would be an annoying leak of fresh water at the place where
the handle entered the pump. A friend recommended pouring "head lube" into the
head, pumping it through the pump, and letting it stay there for a while. I
also managed to pour a little down the hole for the handle. Voila! No more
irritating leak! Apparently the head lube is excellent at reconditioning the
valves!
