I trust that the pump was set in the right position. This happened to me once (OK maybe more) and I found the pump set to flush and as we were sailing the bowl filled up.

The bowl half fills, requiring a “dry” flush to clear it again. Upon arrival, we had the holding tank pumped out, but haven’t tested since. I suspect it has much to do with hoses and hose placement. If the boat is sitting, everything is fine.
