My cunningham is different. It has two lines. One is tied to a fitting about a
foot above the deck on the port side, goes through the cringle about a foot
above the gooseneck and ends with a block on the starboard side of the mast.
The other line is tied to the mast on the starboard side, goes up through that
block at the end of the other line and down to a cam cleat on the mast. To
operate, just pull down on the second line.

On the J-80, there is a line with a hook at the end which goes through a triple
block to another triple with a cleat on it. So I guess it is a six to one
purchase. The J-80 one can be reached from the cockpit, mine requires going to
the mast.

I like the J-80 one better, more purchase.

  Ray,

The cunningham runs from a cringle a foot or two above the main tack fitting
down to deck level where it is often directed via turning blocks to a cleat or
stopper near the companionway.

It serves to pull down on the main, flattening the lower third of the sail in
higher winds. I have always seen them run back to the cockpit, but I suppose
they could just as well tie off at the base of the mast to a small cleat. I
just haven't seen one done like that. My boat has a hook attached to the end
of the cunningham so we can remove it when stowing the main (rolling it up).

  Does that help?

  I purchased a 1985 C&C - 33 and I am missing the cunningham. Does anyone
have a diagram of where it runs on the boat or could explain it to me.

  Thanks,
