I saw the movie and enjoyed it.  It was about the human condition - very existential.   Ending was amibiguous at best though the final scene borrows from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.   That being said one would of course have to think it was the 80's - before the advent of handheld GPS, DSC and waterproof handheld VHF.   I teach Celestial Navigation and the prospect of taking out the book and doing sun sites is slim.  If he was doing noon sites he would get at best latitude and if otherwise an LOP and estimated position - not a fix as shown.  Of course, no life jacket is inexcusable but was probably done purely for aesthetic purposes.   All in all it was a pretty good movie.   Don't forget a couple of handheld gps and extra batteries for your ditch bag.   The boat was a 1970's Cal 39 (they used three, one for ocean sailing scenes, on on set for below and one for special effects, i.e sinking.   Jerry.  C&C 27-V.

The bashing could go on for days, weeks, or until morale improves.
I suggest looking at the string on Sailing Anarchy, they pretty much have it covered.
It was disappointing tho , all the little things, it could have been so much better with very little effort. Just things like actually being concerned that you boat is filling with water and stuffing a vest in the hole, bailing with buckets, or tacking so as to not sail with a hole under water, etc -  But most of us sailors are an overly critical bunch, and non-sailors probably won’t notice most of that stuff.

I saw it last weekend; and agree that it’s an acting tour de force for Redford.

Still, no PFD ever?!  And he clips his harness on to the lifelines?!  I’m not sure they had a decent marine/sailing consultant on the film; or maybe they ignored him/her…

I’m posting this to the list for further bashing.   :^)
