I have a 1974 C&C 39, hull #60.
By 'rudder port', do you mean a metal fitting of some kind where the rudder shaft enters the hull? I have an updated high aspect ratio rudder. I have no skeg. I have no port, and there is no bearing in the rudder shaft - it is basically just a hollow fibreglass tube from . And yes, there is some play at the top, but not at the bottom. The inside of the tube can be greased via a couple of nipples on the outside of the rudder shaft. I have had that rudder out while the boat was in the water (both intentionally and un-intentionally.). However, never has any water entered even when I motored for 20 miles in rough seas with no rudder post in the shaft. If I had water leaking in, then I would be concerned. But then your configuration might be very different than mine. If I understand correctly shark fin refers to the swept by keel, whereas the old style rudders are known as a 'barn door' rudder. I have a '71 C&C 39 (Windquest) and the rudder port is leaking and there is a bit of play where the rudder post enters the hull. Are there drawings available of the rudder port? Has anyone had one apart. The boat is unique among '39s in that it has a partial skeg and high aspect ratio rudder rather than the typical shark fin. Any help would be much appreciated. Jim
