Peter,

I went with Somerset Sails out of New York ((http://www.somersetsails.com/ ,
but don't expect much from the website), he is just outside of Buffalo). He
was highly recommended from other forums. I cannot say how good his sails
are (yet), as I got them in December and there is no way to try them until
some time in May.

I did a major research this fall and I found that you can get a set of
Dacron sails for a 27 ft boat for anywhere from the low of $1500 to the high
of $4500. I evaluated 13 outlets. No question off-shore outlets have much
lower prices. The Sail Store (http://www.thesailstore.com/) - FX Sails came
the lowest (at just over $1500); Peak Sails were also there (~$1900), but
there were numerous very bad comments about them. The local rep (Doyle) was
$3500 after all kinds of discounts (but it was just a rep; there is no local
loft here).

I was impressed with Martin of Somerset; we spent probably a total of 3
hours discussing what I want (and should need) and after that we exchanged
probably 20+ emails discussing the details. So even if this was not a local
loft, I had a chance to talk to a real person (as opposed to ordering
on-line and hoping that what you have ordered is what you really need).
Additionally, I had a long discussion on dimensions, as my measurements were
quite different from what is published about the boat. So if I ordered a
ready-made sail, it would not fit.

I hope I can tell you more in about 6 months (we are quickly dropping to
-20-25 C and we have about 50-60 cm of snow on the ground, so at the moment
it would be easier to drive a truck across our harbor than to sail).

Re: Stus-List Wind Storm Damaged Genoa

The quote from the local loft is in-line with a quote I got two summers ago
for a North genoa when evaluating the various C&C 27?s for sale locally.

Where did you find sails for $2000? I?ve run some online / offshore-made
pricing and no-where do I find anything close to that price.

I?ve got another local loft I can go to for a quote as well, and I could go
back to North in Richmond. In fact I?d love to have North sails .... a brand
always at the head of the fleet from my former Lightning racing days.
