have used this model on last two boats over last 30 plus years...never had smoke problem or coal dust, &coal fuel lasts little over 5 hours...is dry heat...whole secret to these heaters is head stack,..firebox liners which appear to allow hotter burning fuels, chimney &most important dampers & their adjustments plus air intake below ash box the newer model of this is even better with replaceable liners......did much winter sailing in past,plus winter live aboard in past.....temps in low 20s F & some sailing off new york approaches in late dec 0 F...it was cold....delivering boat back for shipping overland to new owner...we also used propane stove with upside down clay flowerpots over propane flame..worked very well...
