One thing to bear in mind when choosing navigation instruments. If you get hit by lightning, every electronic gadget you have on board will be fried even if it is not plugged into anything. Thus you will want old fashion alternatives including a sextant if you are offshore. One way to save a hand held GPS would be to put it in a screened cage, known as a Faraday cage, to protect it from the electric field which results from a lightning strike.
