Count me in as another Garhauer fan. I have the same setup as Rick - good
stuff. And a whole boatload of other Garhauer stuff.

Yes. I have the G2-UB cars on my 38 (and the G1-UB cars on my 25. Originally
put them on the 25 back in about 1996 and still love them.) I also have the
swivel jam cleats on the aft end of the tracks on both boats. I think it keeps
the side deck uncluttered, and you need a jam cleat or a horn cleat to hold the
end of the adjustment line in any event. Using the Garhauer swivel jam cleats
(which mount on the aft end of the track) saved me from having to drill more
holes in the boat.

I think the line adjustable cars are the way to go. $302 for a pair of cars,
$100 for a pair of jam cleats, plus the 5/16 or 3/8 tow line you will need
(maybe 70 feet for each side) will cost about 5 boat bucks.

There is a 35 mk2 down here that has Garhauer pin stop track cars with the G3
sheaves on them. Don’t see the G3s in the Garhauer catalog, but an equivalent
to the G2 with pretty nifty snatch blocks on the car are only $100 each. Of
course, you would be giving up the adjustability that is so nice to save about
$300.

I wonder what Guido would charge me to make some of those snatch blocks for
retrofit to my G2 UB setup?

By the way, the equivalent Harken G323B lead cars (with only 3:1 instead of
5:1 pull on the line and 2250 instead of 2800 pound working load) have an MSRP
of ONLY $860 PER SIDE. So $500 for the whole boat looks like a pretty good
value.

Rick, thanks for the details, and thanks everyone. I am definitely going to
talk to Guido.

Rick are you referring to E-Z Glide on Garhauer website. Car 2 being
$302.50 E-Z G-UB, and Car 3 being $363.00 E-Z G-3?

  You don’t install the tracks.

Use the existing tracks and use the new cars on the old tracks.

(my tracks are 1977 - I assume - and they still don't leak!)

So do most people get away with installing these tracks and never have leaks.
With all the associated holes through the deck it would be very fortunate to
never experience leaking and with the liners in C&C boats that leaking can be
well hidden.

I have the setup that is photo #2 on my 38. Guido at Garhauer will machine
the cars so they fit on the Merriman H track you have already. No need to
convert to more modern T track, with all the hassles of changing.

Among other things, T track has greater spacing between the mounting screws
than H track had, so if you remove the H track, you need to over drill and fill
all of the holes with epoxy to seal the deck, and then over drill, fill, and
drill holes for the new track plus make new aluminum backing plates or modify
the existing plate to fit. New track is a real PITA, and the Garhauer ball
bearing cars work really well on the H track.

Plus Guido did the modified cars for my installation at no extra cost. I
would imagine he will do the same for you.

I chose car #2 vs. car #3 because it offers a greater range of flexibility
when the car is forward and you are broad reaching. Car style #3 is a bigger
sheave and it makes it possible to put two sheets through the sheave, thus
making sail changes easier. I have roller furling, so change the sheets almost
never (at least the ones on the headsail).

At $300 per side, these are a real value and a pleasure to use in comparison
to the old pin stop cars.

If you want to take a poll on the list about the quality, service, and value
of the Garhauer hardware in comparison to Harken or other brands, I don’t think
you will find anyone who has Garhauer stuff to make a bad comment. It is a
little heavier than Harken, but costs half as much and is just a functional.
And of what consequence is a couple of ounces on a boat that weighs in at close
to 15,000 pounds anyway?

  Hi,

has anyone looked into getting an adjustable(re-tractable) geona car system
for an old style C&C genoa tracks?

By adjustable I mean something like this, but components would have to be
compatible with the C&C style genoa track..
