FWIW, I have never had a chart plotter at the helm and have only wished for one once. I do have a MultiControl at the helm, and digital displays mounted above the companionway. When approaching an unknown or potentially dangerous situation, I tend to plan ahead and create a series of temporary waypoints, then create a route. Plan ahead and follow the plan. Of course, under stress one tends to question one's own judgement, but it's no big deal to slow down and flip on the autopilot and jump below to check on the computer and/or plotter. So far, when I .

(sorry I just heard somebody drop chain 60 feet away, and had to go yell 'Why So Close?' when this anchorage is as big as Mexico. It's a big late model Hunter. Go figure. They moved, and that's a good thing because I like to play bagpipe music on the cockpit speakers when somebody anchors on top of me.)

so where was I? Oh, right. So far, I haven't messed up, and it's been enough to have DTW and BTW in my face.

Wal;

I'de like to have a plotter, or some kind of multi-display unit at the helm
