Peter;
My 1976 model 38 (HIN 047) has 4 cockpit scuppers. Two are in the forward corners of the cockpit near the bridge deck, the other two are at the outboard corners of the T-shaped cockpit at the aft end of the cockpit lockers. The drain hoses from the forward scuppers run aft under the cockpit sole, then turn down at the aft end of the fuel tank and T into the drain hoses from the aft scuppers. Both port scuppers drain through a single 1 ½ inch seacock on the bottom of the port hull just aft of the fuel tank and forward of the rudder stock. Ditto for the starboard side scuppers two drains going into one seacock. I cant say Ive ever had an issue with the cockpit draining, at least since I installed a screen over each scupper to keep pine straw and leaves from accumulating in the scuppers and clogging the elbows in the drain hoses. I suppose it would be possible to run the drain hoses aft under the steering quadrant and over the short plywood panels that support the steering tube. You would need to put some sort of strap screwed into the bottom of the cockpit sole to support the long hose run. I suspect it would be better to put a 90 degree elbow at the aft end of the hose and let your new through hull drain straight down through the hull just forward of the transom. The reverse transom would have two slight problems if you tried to go straight aft. The water would run down the transom below the drain and leave a streak of environmental dirt. Thats minor, but the reverse transom would also mean your hose would have a sag in it forward of the thru hull, so it would trap water and never completely drain out. Id also want to look at a picture of my boat taken from the rear when heeled well over to make sure the spot I put the through hull drains was well out of the water. If the through hull goes under water, you would need to put a seacock on the inside of the hull. And I think that would make it very hard to have the hose run slant downward from the scupper to the trough hull for proper drainage. And if you have seacocks, you have to have some sort of access in order to close them if needed. Im intrigued by your plan to install a water maker. Ive thought about that as well, but cant envision a location large enough for the installation that would be accessible for service and would not cause loss of storage space. So Ive decided to live with the current 80 gallons of tankage and figure out a method of collecting rainwater to replace some of what I use. Where do you plan to install the water maker? As you all know cockpit has only two drain holes. They were originally 1-1/4 on my 76 38mk2. Back in 04 I have enlarged them to 1-1/2 to help draining. I would like to use one of them for the watermaker inlet (instead of drilling through core), and was thinking of draining the cockpit via transom. Petar
