The way Bruckmann built this 43 we could take all the core out and it would sail just fine. Might sashay a little in a seaway, but the hull and deck would keep the shape. The outer deck skin is ¼" to 3/8" thick, the balsa 3/8" to ½", the inner skin 1/8th. No core in high load area and where the bulkheads, both the longitudinal and the athwart ships.
We are replacing damaged core with new balsa in the non-load areas. Anywhere there is load or hardware mounted the balsa is replaced with epoxy and glass (both filler and cloth). All hardware holes, wet or not have been over-drilled, filled with epoxy (incl the bevel top and bottom), then re-drilled. I estimate we (the co-owners) have (or are in the process of) drilled and re-filled over 200 holes from the bridge deck to the stem. Calypso has been raced hard much of the last 40 years. The past owners moved, added, and removed hardware. Many of the holes being filled had been plugged with 1970's materials that just worn out. If any other C&C owners want to practice on someone else's deck let me know. There is plenty to go around. On the plus side, the Bruckmann build team in 1970 did a fair job of sealing (with resin) between row of end gain balsa so the water damage is mostly limited to small areas. Lee is both a C&C owner and broker along with being a great photog. Some of my recent favorite pictures of PNW sailboats including Calypso were shot by Lee. Maybe we can get him to post a montage on the cnc-photoalbum "photo gallery". I appreciate the effort "Billy Blood" put into a April Fool's joke. Lee Youngblood sent the screen shot to me earlier but I was not able to find the post on the Three Sheets Northwest web site. The C&C that is having it's reputation impinged is our 43, Calypso. Calypso is under the winter work cover. At his time we have all the deck hatches off for refirb (sent to Hammerhead) and all the deck hardware forward of the cockpit off to fix wet balsa and re-bed. New deck paint is planned. With much of the deck work being unplanned we have canceled our spring racing plans to concentrate of the deck repairs and new paint. The entire interior is tarped off as much of the repair work is being done from the inside. The only "smoke" likely to be seen from Calypso will be fiberglass dust flying off the grinder.
