How about using a bungee cord for attaching the pre-feeder. This is what I have 
on this boat and what I had on the previous one. This works like a charm: when 
you use it, it works like it was attached using a piece of cord, but when it 
drops off the sail, it stays close to the furler’s drum and does not bang 
around.

My pre-feeder is attached to a padeye, at the base of the forestay, with a 
piece of line. Once the jib is hoisted, it drops off the luff to the deck. You 
don't want the pre-feeder attached once the job is hoisted, or it would jam 
when you try to lower the jib. If your luff rope goes all the way to the tack, 
you might ask your sailmaker to hot knife off a section to accommodate the 
pre-feeder.
