Hi Glen,
I replaced the packing on our C&C 27 in the water, I wasn't afraid
to get a little water in the boat. I cut three strips of the
silicon/telon packing to the shaft size, lining them up with the cuts
a third apart. Then I unscrewed the packing glan. The old waxy
thread stuff was dripping and I had enough space to put the new
pacing material outboard on the shaft from the packing nuts, again
rotating the cuts. I had a small coat hanger hook, wine-opener,
pick, and screwdriver ready. All in needed to do, was pluck out the
old stuff, maybe three wraps, and push the new in. Yea I had some
water shooting in, but it was actually fairly painless and quick.
The new silicon stuff is great, and hardly drips at all. Sold the
boat and now have a 35-II with a PYI dripless packing. Not much
dryer, makes noise occasionally, and must be burped when put back in
the water, but that's progress - I guess.
Good Luck, Lee
