Our 1971 C&C 43 has balsa added to the inside of the hull between bulkheads but
is not cored in the same fashion as the deck.

It appears Bruckmann's build team laid up the hull to full thickness then
bonded in sections of balsa and covered those with a heavy layer of glass. (For
stiffening, insulation?) The added balsa ends about 18" back from the hull
center line. It is my opinion that this 43 would be strong enough to sail
without the balsa. (More flexible but strong.) There is no balsa under the
bulkheads but there is some under the "stick built" interior elements.

We are in the middle of a deck repair and restoration project and have looked
closely for any water vs. balsa issues throughout the boat. Most of the
deteriorated balsa has been directly under deck hardware and fasteners. The
best news is Bruckmann's team used good balsa core construction techniques that
have mostly limited water migration beyond the immediate leak area. The
biggest risk is in vertical areas of the deck/cabin where gravity relentlessly
pulls the water down through the core. Last year I repaired an area
below/around a plastic portlight that must have been leaking into the core for
30 years. Took some time and was messy but it will never happen again and that
part of the boat will outlast me.

Subject: Stus-List c&c cored hulls

most c&c cored hulls are no problem unless owners or yards dont instal thru
hulls correctly or make impact repairs taking out core & fitting solid glass
replacement..no water ingress to core...i would not be concern with cored hull
otherwise........
