If you have an SSB with Pactor modem - that's a really good way to get weather and email while offshore. If you set up sailmail, it's pretty simple. (Fred is familiar with mine, so can probably help you sort that out)
The Iridium works fine too, but is expensive (as you likely know). I've used mine a bunch times between the US, Bermuda, and the Caribbean and it's pretty reliable. (But mostly, I stick to the SSB) You can buy minutes/SIM cards from any Iridium dealer. Also, if the phone already has a SIM, you can get it re-activated and re-loaded as long as you get the SIM's number. That way you don't need to take physical delivery of anything.
