ADS-B (AIS for airplanes) isn't any better. At least AIS STARTED out with no way to inject NMEA data - the units had their own GPS. Newer AIS gear and all ADS-B units will take external NMEA, so a freeware NMEA output generator will your boat or airplane anywhere you want it to be ;)
