Did you also mean that the copper pipe from the compressor to the
evaporator is exposed and uninsulated? You can cover that with the black
pipe wrap-around pipe insulation and increase the efficiency of the
system. That stuff is very tough. I used it on my swim ladder to
protect the topsides, and it typically holds up for four years with
constant UV/saltwater exposure and abrasion against the hull. The stuff
on my fridge pipes is still like new.
In addition to the other suggestions, 'foam PVC' might work for an
enclosure. It comes in varying thicknesses up to 1/2 inch, and
various colors. It's primarily used for sign making, but I used it for
headliner panels.
