Not all manufacturers have the balanced rudder setup with the short keel in 
front. The pin catches grass before it gets trapped in the joint. Newer designs 
have a simple balanced spade and older designs have a longer skeg in front of 
the rudder or the rudder is fully attached behind the full keel.

Hi Jim and Wally....I always wondered about that little pin forward of the 
rudder...it has poked me more than once. It must be a C&C 'enhancement' as I 
find it on no other boats in the yard. 
It looks like the pin is just a stud...that there are screw threads up into the 
fiberglass. The explaination offered sounds reasonable, but, if so good...why 
haven't other mfg's picked up onit.

I think it's easier to replace the pin, and judging from the angle of mine
it has deflected a lot of stuff. If it saves you from even one episode of
floating line jammed in between the rudder and hull...it's worth it.
