Interlux Special Thinner 216 smells just like xylene, availble from most paint stores for 1/3 the price.xylene works

Agreed varsol and paint thinner leave an 'oily film'.....why wouldn't they, they are petroleum based. But varsol and paint thinner will remove butyl and will not harm your deck paint any more than the splashing of diesel fuel we apply to our deck paint, annually! So clean any space that needs proper sealing, clean it after the butyl is removed with TSP and/or acetone if the substrate can tolerate acetone.
