The laws of physics make sonar quite good in deep water with steep-to obstacles. A vertical reef wall sticking up from 1,000 feet deep to 5 feet deep could likely be "seen" a quarter mile away. A shallow sloping sand or mud bottom might be detected a boat length ahead. IOW great in the Bahamas and next to useless in the Chesapeake.
