I have one.  I like it quite a bit.  You might consider the Uniden Mystic
instead though.  It is an older unit but it has most of the same features
AND it maps your GPS location.  Not very good charts but better than flying
blind.  The other models of VHFs have bluetooth which I think might be a
better trade off than gps without mapping.

Also bear in mind that the VHF registered with an MMSI will also referance
your boat name and as such using the DSC on another boat could cause
confusion during an emergency.

I mounted the cradle for my HX851 in the boat at the nav staion.  I took
the cradle apart and added hardwire supply lines instead of the plug and
cigarette lighter that it comes with.  The charger cradle is wired through
the on/off for the installed VHF.  That way the charger only comes on when
the switch for the ships radio is on.  It won't over charge and it won't
drain the battery when I'm not there.

The HX851 also has an optional AA battery adapter pack.  Very handy.
