Why not use a Bosun's chair and leave the mast up?

I have a MacGregor 26 which is designated to have the mast raised and lowered
regularly. That mast has cleats on the mast at chest height, but you could go
to a spinnaker ring. A lowering system attaches from the toerails outboard of
the mast step to the cleats. This keeps the mast from going sideways while
lowering. There is also a pole (6-7ft) that attaches and extends out the
forward side of the mast step. The jib halyard is attached to the forward end
of this pole. Attach your lowering line to the same point and route to a
turning block at the bow. Lead the lowering line to a cabin top winch and
secure it tight. Disconnect the forestay and ease tension on your lowering
line. It may take a little push to get the mast to load the lowering line. As
you ease the lowering line and the mast comes down the shrouds should go slack
but the mast will be kept centered by the side ropes.

It is a bit of setup but you can safely raise and lower the mast by yourself.

This link can give you an idea of what I'm suggesting.

I'm still doing the new-owner fixing things and the top of the mast is
beckoning. It regularly gets whacked in low trees, so I have no idea what shape
anything is in. The windicator is long gone, and I'm surprised the VHF whip is
still attached.

My mentor suggested the easiest way to do inspection/repair is to loosen the
bow stay and both shrouds, and just lay the mast down aft. We can then stand on
the dock and fiddle about with it.

It seems perfectly reasonable up front. Anyone with 24 experience beg to differ?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
