When I had a raw water cooled 3GM, the 1st time I went to replace the impellor I found only 1 vane left. Interestingly, the engine was not overheating.
Some years later when I had an overheating problem it was the exhaust elbow that had cloggd with a carbon build up. When I removed the elbow I found a great many vanes trapped there. The vanes were pretty much full sized.
