I have been dealing with exactly that issue since I bought my boat 7 years ago. It hasn't been an issue and as a backup I have a zinc anode on the shaft about 3/8" from the packing nut just in case it lets loose. I'm sure the keyway is wearing out as a result but I haven't noticed any increase in play. It's just on my mind as one of those " not quite right" things
