You can get replacement torlon balls. This happened to me last season. There are 96 balls in the top swivel. I would not recommend putting them back in while the headstay is still attached. I took me less than 5 minutes to replace the balls while it was off the boat. I used shaving cream to hold the balls in place and then rinsed the swivel once everything was back together.
