thanks gentlemen.  Did some more digging -    The garmin 19x caught my eye 
first and have shortlisted it plus the simrad GS 25 and its identical Navico 
siblings (b&g, lowrance).  All these are n2k as will be the network, so no 
multiplexing required.   I note that the Garmin draws 40 ma vs an average of 
"<100ma" for the navicos.     The navicos each have a slightly different cables 
included.   the navicos are all $50 cheaper than the Garmin.
