I can see that if wire rope is cheaper than a spectra cored line it would be a fine solution. However if not then a spectra cored halyard with just spectra core where you currently have wire would likely work very well in existing shiv and be just as strong or stronger than the wire. However, after a fairly lengthy discussion with sailmaker and rigger, I decided to replace with wire rope. I wasn't that keen in replacing the sheeve at the masthead, and my rigger successfully argued that the wire rope halyard had served it's purpose well for the last 30 years...(not sure if was original) so why not replace it with the same.
