Dave,

I’ve been offline this week, rebuilding my computer. Long story, but it all
worked out…

I rebedded the keel on my boat about 12 years ago. The C&C smile was evident,
as well as a slight lateral movement in the keel. I suspect the previous
owner had a hard grounding at some point. The keel was dropped, the joint was
cleaned up, and several cracks in the keel stub were repaired. The boat yard
installed a stainless steel support post around the forward keel bolt. That
way the keel bolt tried to compress the post and not squeeze the mast step.

It is feasible to block the keel and raise the boat to clean and rebed the
surface, but the cradle for the keel needs to be very strong. You’ll also need
a travel lift to pick the boat up. I had professionals do the work for me and
I was glad. The cost was about $7K and well worth the piece of mind.

Subject: Stus-List 33ii Keel rebedding and ballast crack repair?

Hi,

It is time to re-bed the keel (which weeps after haulout) and to consider what
to do about some frost fractures bulging the lead casting at the base of one of
the keelbolts.

Is it feasible to block the keel on the cradle then jack the boat a few inches
skyward to do this work? Has anyone done this?

Have any of you had this work (the rebedding especially) done professionally,
and if so, what was the cost?

Many thanks.

Dave
