I strongly suggest going to http://www.moyermarine.com/. The forum there is
extremely helpful with A4 issues and that is where you'll be getting the
shop manual and parts.

Subject: Re: Stus-List Rebuild suggestions for Atomic IV

Hi Wally,

A normal engine R & R involves a complaint (often age related), high oil
consumption, low compression, etc. If you don't have a specific issue with
the engine and it is more age related prudence and a learning opportunity
then I would suggest you plan for a full gasket& seal set and replace all
consumables; such as impeller, plugs, points, oil.
The other items needed will be identified by the inspection & repair
process. I. E.: cylinder wear = oversize rings, worn valve guides, bearing
clearance checks (plastigauge). In a normal teardown bearings & rings are
automatic because of the ease of replacement while everything is apart. But
if you don't put many hours on anyhow and cost is an issue then something
within spec, albeit worn a bit, could still provide a dozen more years of
service.

We are pulling the A4 from our C&C 30 '73 tomorrow and my son is going to
work on it over the winter for his term project in auto shop class.

The motor gets light use in fresh water so I do not want to go with
electronic ignition or other bells and whistles. The boat has little
residual value despite the fact that it is structurally solid and a hell of
a lot of fun to sail and cruise in, so I do not want to invest too much in
the rebuild.

What do you suggest replacing on it while we have it out?
