A lot of boats have been withdrawn because of damage to the bows and/or
forestays.  In heavy conditions going to Hobart that's not unusual.  Some
of the high-tech materials fail under such conditions because the builders
simply did not know the limitations of the new materials prior to races
like these.

And, yes, Dennis, Teasing Machine and her Swiss skipper are doing an
amazing job.  Earlier Rambler 88 was running in first place for line
honours and second on handicap but as conditions firstly turned nasty and
from the south then lightened, the smaller boats have come into their own.

Personally I love the way GPS boat tracker technology allows us to see
precisely where boats are at any time.  It also stops a few of the
surprises that once happened where boats supposedly 300 miles up the coast
suddenly appeared in the Derwent River.  It also provides information for
navigators and tacticians and thus changes race tactics considerably.
