That's what the PO did on my boat, routed them in a piece of teak and painted
them; and then displayed it on the bulkhead wooden panel. Looks nice and not

I used vinyl letters in the lazarette and varnished over them so they were
"pemanent". If you are handy with a router you can rout the numbers in a piece
of wood and attach it.
