I had a Shakespeare unit that worked fine as well, though I opted for AIS last year and installed the Simrad transponder. The matching splitter has an FM output in addition to VHF for the AIS and radio. That works very well, no interference issues. The boat originally came with a telescoping antenna mounted behind the electrical panel. That was not very effective.
