The biggest issue is that the cable is probably permanently attached to the
connection block at the masthead; so you?d need to splice new cable to a
pigtail of the existing cable near that block.
Belden 9534 would be an almost perfect replacement for the existing cable,
except that the color code for the Belden is red/green/black/white, and your
existing cable is red/green/brown white:
http://www.belden.com/techdatas/metric/9534.pdf
It runs about $0.60 per foot
(https://www.prowireandcable.com/ib/belden-9534/9534?gclid=COeE0Z-M8cwCFQmqaQod3YoDPw).

Thanks for the info -- my wheel used to do three turns stop to stop but I
reconfigured my below decks tiller arm (that sits above the quadrant --
quarter circle) in a way that, unintentionally, will reduce it to 2 turns.
I suppose I really should ask what a reasonable maximum rudder angle
would be. Or just gio back and put it back the way it was (which is a
nasty bit of below decks work in an impossibly tight space) The boat is a
33 mark 1.

+1 on the ebay and Craigslist. I keep running searches on ebay for all

I get a little less than 3/4 of a turn to the port and to the stbd.
Whenever I make adjustments I make sure that the amount of travel is equal
on both sides and then of course make sure that with the wheel centered it
steers a straight course.

For you left Coasters... the new issue of Lectronic Latitude notes that there
is a Melody Kanschat skippering a Marina del Rey-based C&C 40 Harmony; anyone
know the Captain or the boat? I would be neat to get an update or personal
account of the voyage and events!
