I agree. Try it out and see. If it works then you may be able to postpone your investment in a new system. I think the wind instrument is/was providing input to the AP so that it could sail to the wind not just a magnetic coarse.
It looks like the 3 knobs are for adjusting the response time. The manual will obviously explain.
