The last two mainsails I have had made came with straps - about 18-24 inches long, made with Velcro backed cloth. And, the J-24 and J-80 sails I have used.

I was told NEVER to attach the sail ties to the boom when reefing.. If you bother with them at all just go around the bottom of the sail and back / cinch it to keep from flopping around.. Personally I usually don't bother and just use either the hook on the gooseneck for the tack side or the Cunningham line to give it a remote adjustment for quick release when racing and the outhaul / reefing line at the clew..
