You want to have, at least, a good rung or two under water and a reasonable way
of clearing the pushpit. This applies to those of us who are not built like
Mark Spitz. Your Admiral will be thankful.
I know that it may sound funny, but one of the reasons why we changed boats was
the difficulty of access from the water on the old one and the open transom on
the new one.
I also know a fellow sailor in our Club who is selling his boat for the same
reason- his wife had the hip replacement and has a major difficulty getting out
of the water.
In short, when you install the new ladder, invest in a good solution: long
ladder and a gate in the pushpit.
Good luck
Marek
