I have been fixing my ancient AH 4000 ( not the ST4000, the real old one
with the black box and red buttons) for decades now.
I never was interested in the ST4000 because it seems to have more issues
and problems than the ancient one did. If I do replace it, I am going for
the newest unit. From everything I can tell it is much much better than
anything that came before it.
You can get trapped in an endless cycle of scavenging EBay for expensive
spares - just go new.

Subject: Stus-List AP - Old vs New

Hey

Considering that you don't know if the rest of your AP system works, I
strongly suggest that you buy a new system. I'm really surprised at the cost
of the used control head. IMHO it's not worth the chance that some of the
older gear won't work. The new gear is modern, will come with all new
wiring, an interfaces easily with other devices.

The EV100 should work very well with your 30. If you do sail in shifty
conditions you may appreciate the 'sail to wind angle' setting. Note that if
you encounter a large wind shift you need to acknowledge the change on the
control head. Small shifts are handled automatically

Good luck,
Barry

Hi Barry, I have a C&C 30MK1 - would use it in most conditions and mostly
solo sailing where i missed not having the AP the most. Most of my sailing
are few hour trips and racing around the bay; not allowed to use it for
racing. it is real nice to set when putting sails up, cruising and
relaxing, make coffee or whatever.

The winds where I sail tend to be gusty and shifty. I don't plan on
interfacing to anything else. Perhaps I should think that way i do have a
standard horizon cp300i chartplotter and older navman 3100 depth and speed
instruments. wind instrument is shot and would eventually replace but for
now i don't miss it.

the control head has always been missing since I purchased the boat last
year I can only assume the other components work.

A used 4000+ control head seem to be about $750cnd and the ev1000 will be
about $2000 cnd with rebate. I don't like to spend more than I have too but
I like things to work as well, tough decision - leaning towards the new one.
I really don't think used electronics should be worth that much but they
seem to be hard to find and expensive.
