Randy,
If it is still pliable, you can sometimes roll it.  Start with a little glob 
and roll it like a snowball.  Sometimes that will pick up a good bit of it. You 
may have to roll backward then go forward again to pick it up. If you can get 
the bulk of it this way it makes the rest with solvent a lot easier. 
If it is squeezing out of a hard edge, like the side of a track, toe rail or 
deck hardware, take a sharp knife and cut it along the hard edge.  That will 
make it a lot easier to pick up than pulling it out of a joint.  Picture 
cutting salt water taffy as opposed to pulling it. 
If memory serves, I think it was acetone that takes it off. If not, it was 
alcohol  .
