Many of those bronze strainers have, or had an internal flapper to act as a
check valve. Many of the simple 2 to 4gpm diaphragm pumps are self priming
and will pump the suction lines more or less dry. Even if they don't, the
pumps have internal check valves which prevent a lot of back flow.

Those pumps should be able to attach to your existing strainer and then a
water which level detector can be used to detect water in the sump. There
are lots of mounting options for the water witch but the one I like is
using a hose clamp to clamp it to the suction hose.

This is just a cheap example. There are lots of options and manufacturers.

Hey everyone,
I'm having trouble finding a decent solution for the shower sump in our 34.
The pump died on me last year and I'm trying to find a replacement system
that makes sense. I'm intrigued by the Whale Gulper IC system but I don't
know if I can put the sensor or even a drain into the bottom pan. Currently
it has a bronze round strainer that sucks the water up through a hose that
lies on the bottom of the pan and through the base of the sink cabinet. I
don't recall seeing a check valve to prevent water from going back into the
pan either.

This is the system I was looking at. http://www.defender.com/

What have you all done for sump solutions? Does anyone know what kind of
clearance there is between the base of the pan and the hull? Could
something like the IC drain system work in that area?

Thanks,
