Agreed on that approach, as it is what I did on our Yanmar 3jh2e when I needed 
to spin the impeller a little bit as I was removing it.

    Another approach, if the front pulley is accessible, is to put a
    deep socket on the nut holding the pulley to the crankshaft, then
    use  a socket wrench or a breaker bar to rotate the engine.
