There are ways to tune the rig without but I like the consistency and scientific order to doing it with a tension gauge. My understanding is that you need an RT-10 or RT-11 for rod rigging. The important factor being that rod is naturally more rigid than wire thus the scale is different. After tuning, the boat no longer has a pronounced favoritism for a port tack.
