The engine is definitely not a loss and as others have said is most likely a blown head gasket. Aside from the labor you can probably get the gasket kit for ~$100. You'll have other incidentals and parts/tool costs but for less than $1000 you'll be back on the water. For that $1000 I suggest that you take the head to a machine shop, it may have warped as a result of overheating. While it is off the engine (diy or at the shop) do a valve job - Guides, seals, seats, springs.
