Hi Rich,
     While I agree that mounting the ram to a shelf on the hull is the
traditional way to do it (C&C does it that way), I like my design better
because it reduces the lateral force on the hull to almost zero and reduces
the chance of the shelf ripping loose.  There is a sheer force on the hull,
but it's about 25% of the total ram force and the joint will be stronger in
sheer as well.
     Some people connect the ram to the rudder quadrant, but in discussions
with Rob Ball (C&C designer of the 37+) he says that's a very bad idea,
because the quadrant isn't strong enough and if the quadrant fails, you
lose all steering.  It's also very hard to keep the ram dry (corrosion).
