The $1 solution was sealing the hole and the $20 solution was having the mast step span the gap so the wood was not acting like a bridge over the bilge with weight in the center. My new ½” aluminum plate over the new wood spans the width of the bilge and does try and bend the wood.

I did mine in 1995 I think and it wasn’t real expensive in $$, but it was a lot of time with a chisel getting semi-rotted wood out.
