When you ship from US to Canada, you have to pay import duties (tolls,
tariffs), if they apply (rarely). You also have to pay sales tax (provincial
and federal), though, if value is lower than x, you may get exempted ($50 or
$100, from what I have seen, very discretionary). If you use UPS they charge a
brokerage fee, usually $80, just to verify that no duties are due. If the
shopper has an agreement with Canada Post, the flat fee is $5 or $10, depending
on the value. USPS used Canada Post on our side, so the brokerage fees are more
reasonable.

On top of that most US vendors charge exorbitant shipping charges. It is often
better to ship (free) to a border town (e.g. UPS store) and make a trip.

Lately, the local stores offer quite competitive prices (e.g. Binnacle, Marine
Outfitters or Ottawa Chandlery).

I am not trying to be a smart aleck.  Seriously wanting education.  Your import
taxes in Canada.  Are those like tariffs?  On everything or just some things.
Inquiring mind....

There are no west marine stores in Canada. For a Canadian to pay US funds plus
shipping plus import taxes plus brokerage fees is out of the question.

Thanks anyway. I’ll do my shopping at the Binnacle.
