I just did the deck and topsides over a two year period (actually closer to three but I cant bring myself to say it) on my C&C35 MkI. I had help on the sanding but it still took forever. To do it right was a big undertaking but definitely doable. We used Matterhorn White (Awlgrip) for the deck and Awlcraft (vivid red) for the topsides. The result is fantastic. I hired a professional spray guy to apply the two part paint and am glad I did. No mistakes.
Good luck. Touchups were done on the Niagara and our next boat (J27) we also repainted all of the non skid and some of the gloss areas. On the Niagara the deck had previously been painted with some paint that was failing. Suspect was acrylic. It was too white and poorly done. We sanded most of that off until surface was ready for a new coat. The recommended Interlux primer was used as a barrier between the unknown previous paint and the two part Interthane Plus (Perfection now). We used Off-White. Touch-ups were easily done using Brightside of the same colour (Off-White). The shop that painted the deck for me (after my failed attempt at spraying) then mixed flattening agent and non-skid additive into the Perfection Off White. I taped the non skdi areas and then they applied the non skid. The contrast was very nice and there was no glare. The entire job was excellent Two years later I re-cored the areas around the chainplates and the entire cockpit floor. I used Brightside (Off White) with the nonskid additive and flattening agent for the non skid and unmixed Brightside Off White for the gloss areas. It blended in very well. By 2008 we had changed boats and Interlux now sold Interdeck which is basically Brightside with nonskid additive already mixed in. Very easy to apply. We needed to re-core the deck in a number of areas around stanchions (it is a J Boat after all). The non-skid was in a number of separated sections and was a contrasting grey colour. We repainted the entire non skid with Interdeck Grey just rolling it on after taping. Brightsides OffWhite for the small gloss areas that I had to paint where necessary (limited this to a very few small areas near toerail). Interdeck can be applied over previous paint and over fiberglass. Also over epoxy if primer is used. Very easy product to apply but non-skid properties are not as good as Kiwi Grip. From what I understand Kiwi-Grip can also be applied directly to a fiberglass deck and over epoxy with a primer. A bit more involved to get the proper non skid properties. I have used the Interthane Plus (Perfection) on a dingy with decent results using Roll-Tip method and have painted a canoe and a Laser using Brightsides roll and tip method. Especially the Brightsides is very easy to use with Roll/Tip by a DIY person. A lot of wastage with the two part paints. I really did like the two part Interthane Plus (Perfection) for its durability and easy of touch up. The Interlux people are also very willing to answer any questions if you can get through to them Regards Mike Persistence 1987 Frers 33 #16 Halifax Formerly Nut Case 1987 J27 #150 Full Tilt 2 1979 Niagara 26 #002 -----Original Message----- From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Mike Rose via CnC-List Sent: Monday, April 23, 2018 6:48 PM To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Mike Rose Subject: Stus-List Deck painting Hi there- I am planning to paint the deck and have few questions for those that have gone before me. I plan to use Perfection with Kiwigrip. I did a sample locker lid with Snow White Perfection and White KiwiGrip. The Perfection is a bit too white/reflective. I’d rather use a different shade of white over a flattening agent. Here goes the questions. 1- what shade of perfection is preferred for the smooth deck surfaces? 2- is there a recommended approach if I need to divide the effort between two off-seasons (ie side decks and cabin one year, cockpit the next) 3- what sanding tool is best for the curves and corners?
