The thinner the shaft the less likely those things are to work. The yard that did mine removed the prop shaft to do the job, their tool would not work on a 7/8” shaft. The tool is essentially a pipe that fits over the prop shaft that presses the bearing out with a way to grab the strut and not try and wrench the strut off the boat. The thicker the cutless bearing (NOT cutlass), the better they work.

There is a gadget that presses the cutlass bearing out with shaft in place. I got me one. I’ve read they’re finicky. As in, they work great on brand new cutlass bearings. Never used it because we changed the CB when new shaft installed.
