There should be no gases, odours or any other side effects. But they can overheat if you use them or charge incorrectly. They have very high energy density and you have probably read about exploding laptops, phones or Boeings 787s.
You will need very specialized charger and alternator regulator. And you would have to become an expert, as you could not count on any local knowledge of the technology.
